Heart of Midlothian missed out on a historic Scottish Premiership title after losing to Celtic on the final day of the 2025-26 season. Needing only a draw at Celtic Park on 16 May 2026 to be crowned champions, Heart of Midlothian fell to a late goal from Celtic's Callum Osmand, which secured the league for the hosts and left the visitors two points adrift in second place. The result ended the club's best title challenge since 1986 and prolonged their wait for a first league championship since 1960.

Celtic's victory capped a dominant finish to their campaign, as they won every post-split fixture to claim the league. A week later, they added the Scottish Cup to complete a historic domestic double. Martin O'Neill, the Celtic manager, was pictured lifting the Premiership trophy with captain Callum McGregor after the decisive match, and later celebrated the cup win with his coaching staff.

Echoes of 1986

The pain of the occasion was deepened by its striking similarity to another infamous chapter in Heart of Midlothian' history. In 1986, the club also needed just a draw on the final day to win the league, only to lose to Dundee after two late goals. The 2025-26 campaign represented their most credible opportunity to end the long title drought since that gut-wrenching day at Dens Park.

Former Heart of Midlothian hero Rudi Skacel, who was in Scotland at the time, expressed his profound disappointment. He said he felt physically sick when the team returned from Celtic Park and described the outcome as a major loss not only for the club and its supporters, known as Jambos, but for Scottish football as a whole. Skacel added that he believed the Heart of Midlothian squad, which he had seen train and felt was mentally strong, deserved to win the title.

Rebuilding for a new season

Months on from that crushing finale, Heart of Midlothian are rebuilding in the new campaign. They currently sit third in the Premiership with 13 points from seven games, a record of four wins, one draw and two losses. Their recent form reads three wins, one draw and one loss from the last five outings. The team is five points behind leaders Celtic as they prepare for their next match, a home fixture against St Mirren on 10 October.

James Wilson leads the team's scoring charts this season with three goals. The squad will be looking to him and others to provide the firepower needed to mount another challenge, with the full roster available on our squad list. While the memory of the title near-miss lingers, the focus now shifts to consolidating a strong league position and performing in the cups. The next test comes against a St Mirren side sitting fifth in the table.
