Lee Wallace has been promoted to the first-team coaching staff at Heart of Midlothian. The club confirmed the move on Monday, raising the former player from his position as Transition Phase Coach.

Wallace, a 39-year-old academy graduate who made nearly 200 appearances for the club as a left-back, returned to Tynecastle in 2024 to work with the under-18s and B Team. His promotion is part of head coach Wouter Vrancken's restructuring to create a unified backroom team. "Lee Wallace has joined the first-team coaching set up," the club stated.

Vrancken’s unified vision

Vrancken explained that upon his arrival, the coaching staff was split into separate offices for first team, performance, and goalkeeping departments at the Oriam training base. He has since worked to bring everyone together. "We changed it so that everybody from the first team coaching staff is together," Vrancken said. He believes Wallace can add significant value. "Lee Wallace can add good value to the staff, also to the players individually and in units," the head coach added, highlighting the importance of presenting a single, cohesive unit to the squad.

This alignment supports the club's broader footballing strategy, known as The Heart of Midlothian Way, which aims to ensure a consistent pathway for academy players progressing to the senior level. Wallace's intimate knowledge of that pathway, having come through it himself and recently helped guide young players, is seen as a major asset. His appointment follows last month's news that he had become assistant coach for the Scotland under-19s side.

Immediate impact for busy schedule

The promotion comes at a key moment, with Heart of Midlothian sitting third in the standings on 16 points from eight games. They are the league's top scorers with 19 goals, averaging a goal every 38 minutes, and are preparing for a demanding run of fixtures. This includes an away match against league leaders Celtic this weekend and the start of their Europa Conference League group stage at home to FC Nordsjaelland on Thursday. The team's recent form is strong, having scored 11 goals in their last three matches, including a 5-0 win over St Mirren.

Wallace will immediately join the senior setup for these key matches, bringing over two decades of elite football experience to Vrancken's team, which includes assistants Tim Smolders and Cederique Tulleners.

In a related squad decision, Vrancken confirmed that midfielder Eduardo Ageu has been added to the European squad for Thursday's match, taking the spot opened by Blair Spittal's injury. Ageu, who played 55 minutes in Saturday's 5-0 win over St Mirren, was chosen over the fit-again defender Malachi Fagan-Walcott. Vrancken noted it was a tough call, as Fagan-Walcott played well in his return, but the need for midfield cover was greater. Wallace's first official duty with the first-team staff will be at Tynecastle for the European tie against Nordsjaelland. Fans can view the full squad list and injury updates on the club's official injuries page.
