Heart of Midlothian were on the wrong end of a 7-1 demolition away to Celtic in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday. The heavy defeat at Celtic Park exposed significant defensive frailties and leaves Heart of Midlothian third in the standings, now eight points behind the league leaders.

Celtic struck twice inside the opening ten minutes. Kieran Tierney fired in after seven minutes before Benjamin Nygren doubled the advantage three minutes later. The hosts' dominance continued as Callum Osmand scored twice in quick succession in the 36th and 38th minutes. Laurent Mendy pulled one back for Heart of Midlothian four minutes later, assisted by Josh McPake, but the brief respite was shattered when Jamie McCart turned the ball into his own net in first-half stoppage time.

Second-half collapse

Any hope of a comeback was extinguished four minutes after the restart when Camilo Duran made it six. Benjamin Nygren completed the scoring with his second of the afternoon seven minutes from time. The statistics painted a grim picture, with Celtic converting ten of their 18 shots on target while Heart of Midlothian managed just five from 20 attempts. The visitors also conceded six corners and saw Calvin Miller booked in the first half.

Manager Wouter Vrancken offered a blunt assessment after the match. His side lined up in a 4-4-1-1 formation but made four changes during the game, including bringing on Tomas Bent Magnusson and Rogers Mato at the start of the second half. He lamented his team's lack of aggression and poor defensive structure, stating they were "too passive" and "not compact enough" from the outset.

The result is a major setback for a Heart of Midlothian side that had won three of its last five league games. They remain third in the Premiership with 16 points from nine matches, but the goal difference took a severe hit, dropping from +5 to -1. McPake, who provided the assist for Mendy's consolation, is the club's top scorer this season with three goals. Attention now turns to European competition, with a UEFA Europa Conference League trip to face Trabzonspor on Thursday. After that, Heart of Midlothian return to league action with an away fixture against Motherwell on Saturday, where they will aim to stop a run of conceding goals at a rate of one every 18 minutes, as evidenced by the seven shipped at Celtic Park.
